ESRA Research Grant

The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA) proudly presents the ESRA Research Grant in order to achieve the distinctive goals of ESRA, such as

  • to encourage specialisation of anaesthesiologists and other physicians in regional anaesthesia or pain management
  • to promote, sponsor and encourage research in experimental, epidemiological or clinical settings regarding regional anaesthesia or pain management.
  • to help anaesthesiologists in under resourced countries to develop their scientific programmes

ESRA members from all over the world are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be ESRA members and should be at least in their third year of medical specialisation.

Applications could be forwarded at any time of the year to the ESRA bureau.

Decisions on the grant will usually be made by the board twice a year for applications received before February 1st, and for applications received before August 1st

Grants will be given to ESRA members applying for support for their research in or in cooperation with a recognized specialised centre of excellence for regional anaesthesia. The proposed research projects are preferentially performed in Europe. Grants will be given preferably to those who apply for a research program headed by an ESRA member. Grants will be given preferably to those who have already done research on regional anaesthesia or pain management and published their results as a first or senior author in peer reviewed international journal.

The grants are given to encourage research programs (rotations) of a minimum of a three months period. The grant should be used for direct costs such as ethics committee approval, patients insurance, equipment, materials, research nurses or laboratory assistants, travel costs etc..

Grants consist of a fixed 4000€ expenses reimbursement paid by bank transfer 4 weeks ahead of the start of the research program (to be confirmed by the programs director and by a positive vote of the ethics committee, the dean of the faculty or animal research authority). Thereafter, a grant of 3000€ maximum will be transferred after 6 months and again after 12 months. This will indispensably require a cost plan in advance and a reimbursement sheet documenting the real current costs of the project. In addition, a report on the status of the project will be required at that time. The publication of the research project should state that it was sponsored by an ESRA Research Grant.

In total, a maximum 10.000€ will be reimbursed per application pending receipt presentation of real costs.

Up to two grants per year are given adding up to a maximum total support of 20.000€.

The application should include :

  • Responsible research fellow (CV)
  • ESRA membership number
  • Head of the program commitment (chair of department, faculty) (CV + ESRA membership number)
  • Research Plan including time line and cost plan
  • Ethics committee approval (or animal research approval if appropriate)
  • List of prior publications

After pre-selection by the grants subcommittee the ESRA board will decide on a majority vote basis taking into consideration at least two referees votes on the research application.
