ESRA European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia & Pain Therapy
The ESRA European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia & Pain Therapy aims to educate clinicians involved in regional anesthesia and to achieve a uniformly high standard of knowledge as judged by an independent Board of Examiners.
The ESRA exams Part I and II are given during the Society’s annual congress.
The diploma exam part I consists of 100 written Multiple choice questions (MCQ) to answer in a time frame of 2 hours. It usually takes place during the first day of the congress.
The diploma exam part II is only open to successful candidates who passed the written exam in a previous congress. It consists of 25 minutes examination given by 2 examiners and usually takes place the day prior to the first day of the congress.
The results are communicated 1 day prior to the end of the congress in the congress center.
Successful examinees who passed the ESRA diploma Part I will be sent a certificate electronically within 2 weeks after the congress.
Diplomas are distributed during the closing ceremony to the successful candidates who passed the exam Part II – absent diplomats will receive their diploma by post within 2 weeks after the congress.
Requisites for attendance
The requisites described here after must be fulfilled before applying for Part I of the diploma!
1- Written candidate’s certification signed by the head of department or Director of programme, certifying a performance of at least:
- 100 central blocks
- 50 upper limb blocks
- 50 lower limb blocks
Please note that all documents will be double checked, including the validity of the signed letter certifying number of blocks!
2- ESRA membership for the current year
3- Certificate of Attendance of at least two ESRA workshops (National or European) during the last three years, including the current year:
- 1 cadaver workshop (mandatory)
- 1 hands-on workshop on anatomical, landmarks for peripheral nerve blocks with/ without aid of ultrasound or 1 Hands-on workshop on ultrasound-guided nerve blocks

How it works
Two years exam taking place at the annual ESRA congress
- a. First Year – Diploma Exam Part I (Written Exam)
100 Multiple Choice Questions
2 hours examination usually given during the first day of the congress.
A result of 75% and more is considered as passed.
No mobiles or photographic material are allowed during the exam (penalty: exclusion from exam).
Topics: anatomy, pharmacology, central blocks, peripheral blocks, obstetric regional anaesthesia, paediatric regional anaesthesia, acute pain

Are 2 cadaver workshops recognized as well?
- Yes, you are also eligible for the exam with 2 cadaver workshops.
Can I complete required workshops during the Annual Congress and sit the exam at the same time?
- No. You need to fulfill all exam requirements before the ESRA diploma session.
Can I apply for the ESRA Diploma now and hand in workshop and block certificates later?
- No. Only complete applications will be considered for review.
